THE FIRST NATIVE AMERICAN WOMEN ELECTED TO CONGRESS IN MIDTERM POLLS
The Democrat candidates Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland broke a new ground yesterday,as they become the first Native American women elected to Congress.
Davids, 38 years old, of Kansas, is an attorney by training and a former mixed martial arts fighter. She is openly a lesbian, in a state that is traditionally conservative. She defeated the incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder.
Haaland, 57 years old, of New Mexico, beat Janice Arnold-Jones, a Republican as well, and Lloyd Princeton, a Libertarian.
Davids and Haaland were among the record number of Native Americans who ran in the midterm elections for governor's offices,State legislatures, congressional seats, among other elected posts.
